There was somewhat of an uproar a few days ago in response to pop singer Madonna using photoshopped images of Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela to promote her upcoming album, “Rebel Heart”.

The photos were modeled after the actual album cover, the common concept of each photo being the black rebel heart ribbon wrapped around the subject’s face. MLK Jr. and Mandela were actually two of several photoshopped, others including Jesus Christ, Bob Marley, Marilyn Monroe, and more. However, no commentary was really made until the inclusion of the two black civil rights activists, critics accusing Madonna of being racist and disrespectful on twitter and instagram.

The 56-year-old posted to Facebook on Friday, issuing an apology of sorts and defending the images:

“I’m sorry
I’m not comparing my self to anyone
I’m admiring and acknowledging there Rebel Hearts
This is niether a crime or an insult or racist!
